Max “Splash” Sternberg sank his first recorded cap in 2011 — and before the night was even over, delivered his first recorded rebuttal too, making sure everyone in the room understood both halves of what they were watching. What followed was a career that became the gold standard for generations of caps players, on offense and defense alike.
Over his career, Splash has built a résumé that’s as much a highlight reel as it is a warning label:
Widely regarded as the greatest all-around player the sport has produced.
Beyond the statistics, Sternberg became known for two signature tells. On offense, the smooth shooting motion — raising the cap to his forehead before every attempt — became instantly recognizable; young players copied it, opponents studied it, and eventually it became synonymous with the sport itself. On defense, it was the look: the half-second pause after an opponent’s cap landed, right before he answered it. Opponents started missing on purpose, just to avoid finding out.
When the American Cap Association sought a symbol for precision, confidence, and the spirit of competition, the choice was unanimous. His silhouette became the league’s official logo.
Today, every ACA match is still played under the shadow of the player who defined both sides of the modern game.
